Founded in 1947 by Erling Persson in Västerås, Sweden, H&M began as “Hennes” (Swedish for “hers”), selling only women’s clothing. Persson was inspired by a trip to the United States, where he witnessed high-volume fashion retail revolutionizing department stores. In 1968, Persson acquired Stockholm-based hunting apparel retailer Mauritz Widforss, adding menswear to the lineup and changing the name to Hennes & Mauritz (H&M).
