Get up to 21% back on H&M in Europe with your VAT refund. Conscious Collection, Studio Collection, Designer Collaborations across 41 stores. Stockholm flagship.
Founded in 1947 by Erling Persson in Västerås, Sweden, H&M began as “Hennes” (Swedish for “hers”), selling only women’s clothing. Persson was inspired by a trip to the United States, where he witnessed high-volume fashion retail revolutionizing department stores. In 1968, Persson acquired Stockholm-based hunting apparel retailer Mauritz Widforss, adding menswear to the lineup and changing the name to Hennes & Mauritz (H&M). The company went public on the Stockholm Stock Exchange in 1974. H&M pioneered affordable fashion with designer collaborations, launching partnerships with Karl Lagerfeld (2004), Stella McCartney (2005), Versace (2011), and Balmain (2015). By 2025, H&M operates 4,800+ stores in 75+ markets, with a family of brands including COS, Monki, Weekday, and & Other Stories. The company is aggressively pursuing sustainability: by 2025, H&M has fully phased out virgin down, feathers, and mulesed sheep wool, with strategic investments in AI, big data, and cloud technologies.
H&M was born in Sweden, making Europe the brand's home market with priority access to new collections, designer collaborations, and exclusive European launches. Spain offers the best VAT value with no minimum spend—get refunds on any purchase. Sweden's Stockholm flagship stores showcase the brand's Nordic heritage with Scandinavian minimalism and first access to Studio Collection drops. European stores carry H&M Home collections with better curation than international markets. Shopping in Europe means supporting the brand's sustainability initiatives—90% of down and feathers are now recycled.
